House washing explained

Know the work.
Before you book.

House washing is the clean for the building’s exterior surfaces. Painted weatherboards, coated plaster and other cladding need an approach suited to the finish and its condition. A useful quote makes those surfaces clear before anyone starts work, rather than treating every house as the same job.

  • Assessment of surface condition and existing damage

Discuss separately

  • Roof treatment and gutter clearing
  • Detailed exterior window cleaning
  • Repairs, repainting and restoration

Exterior walls, eaves and trim

The wall area is only part of a home’s exterior. Soffits, gutter faces, porches and trim may need attention too, but they should be named in the scope. A house wash does not automatically include cleaning inside the gutters, treating the roof or leaving the glass with a detailed window-cleaning finish.

Soft washing and surface care

Soft washing describes a lower-pressure approach; it is not a reason to skip a surface assessment. Loose paint, damaged seals, uncoated timber and fragile fittings can change the work. The proposed method needs to suit the manufacturer’s care instructions and the actual finish, including areas that may need to be left alone.

How a house-washing quote is worked out

Storeys, wall area, rooflines, extensions and the route around the home influence the work. A small house with limited access can take more planning than a larger, open site. The quote should distinguish a maintenance wash from a pre-paint clean and identify any additional tasks before a booking is confirmed.

Getting ready for the exterior clean

Clear access around the walls makes the planned areas easier to reach. Outdoor furniture, clothes, delicate items and pets need consideration, along with windows, vents and electrical fittings. Preparation is agreed for the property; it should not depend on the customer climbing onto a roof or reaching unsafe areas.

What affects your house washing quote

House washing questions

A little clarity before you book.

Ask another question
What is included in a house wash?

The quote lists the exterior walls and any eaves, soffits, trim or other areas included. Roof work, gutter clearing, detailed glass cleaning and repairs are separate tasks unless expressly added.

Is house washing the same as water blasting?

No. Water blasting refers to a pressure-cleaning method, while a house wash is the service outcome. The pressure, products and approach need to be suitable for the cladding and finish.

Does a house wash remove every mark?

No cleaning method can promise that. Oxidation, failing paint, permanent staining and damage can remain after surface dirt is cleaned. Those areas need assessment before the work is confirmed.

Is house washing available outside Auckland?
